About Forecast Australia

The world's best global models, drawn over Australia properly. ECMWF's HRES is the most accurate global forecast there is, and it is rendered here on its 0.1 degree grid — about 11 km — rather than the 0.25 degree open-data grid most public sites draw. Beside it run ECMWF's machine-learning AIFS, the Met Office Global at 10 km as an independent second opinion, and the Met Office global wave model for the sea those runs are raising.

Australia is drawn at native resolution, not upscaled. Every model here is global and every raster is rendered at full model width, so the continent is sampled at the same grid spacing the model actually computed — about 420 columns of HRES across the country, which is exactly what HRES has. Web Mercator stretches vertically with latitude, so at 25°S the rows are if anything finer than native. Nothing is interpolated up from a regional crop.

Navigate by place, not by zoom. States and territories, cities, the whole continent, Australasia, the Southern Ocean, the world — each is a framing you press a button for. Flipping between models holds the valid time, not the forecast hour, so what changes on screen is the forecast rather than the moment being shown.

The data

HRES and AIFS come from ECMWF, and the Global and Wave models from the Met Office's open-data feed on AWS. Both are ingested and rendered elsewhere in this network — on the machines that already sit next to those feeds — and this site reads the finished global rasters. Nothing is re-ingested for Australia and nothing large crosses an ocean twice.

Fields are drawn with no smoothing and no rescaling; colour ramps are pinned to absolute values; every frame is a reversible encoding, which is what lets the pointer read a number back out of any pixel. Temperatures are Celsius, winds km/h and seas metres. Isobars are drawn from the full-precision field, never from the picture.

Why no Australian model? The Bureau of Meteorology's ACCESS suite is not open data. Every real-time BOM product — ACCESS-G, ACCESS-C, the ADFD forecast grids, radar and satellite — sits behind a paid Registered User licence, and the free anonymous feed forbids republication and commercial use. Rather than show you a worse forecast because it is Australian, this site shows you the best ones available and says plainly where they came from.

What this is not

Not an official service and not a source of weather warnings — for those, the Bureau of Meteorology is always the authority. This is raw model guidance: no forecaster has looked at it, and it will sometimes be confidently wrong.
